Gauge the risk of violence and protect yourself

Here are some signs that you should be aware of to protect yourself from violence:

  • My feeling of fear or danger has increased
  • The violent episodes are more frequent
  • The seriousness of the violence is worsening
  • The violence is taking place in public
  • My partner abuses drugs or alcohol
  • My partner has psychiatric problems
  • I am isolated from my network (family, friends, neighbours, colleagues, professionals etc)

The more signs the more you should be vigilant.

In all cases, you should know that:

  • You have the right to leave the home at any moment to find shelter (with your family, friends, in a refuge etc)
  • You (or any other person present) can call the police on 117
  • If there is physical or sexual violence, it is recommended to get a medical statement as early as possible afterwards
  • You should ensure that your children are safe
  • You should try and not be alone but rather speak about your situation to professionals or people in your network

Protecting yourself does not imply an action against your partner, but it provides a clear signal to him/her that you need and have the right to a relationship without violence.
